Santa Monica College Student Film to be Screened at Cannes

“’Broken Layers’ is both a highly engaging story and a haunting meditation of the aftermath of war,” said Carrasco, who also served as executive producer. “It is also a powerful artistic testament combining the nuanced performance by Rawan Hage as Rosa, the stylized yet realistic visuals of Milana Burdette and her cinematography team, and the unforgettable soundtrack by Mixtape Quartet. This is the kind of film that makes us proud of what we’ve accomplished in the few years of existence of the SMC Film Production Program.”

DVORAK MEETS THE BEATLES: A MODERN MIXTAPE ON CLASSICAL INSTRUMENTS

“The (now) four co-artistic directors of Mixtape formed a core ensemble over quarantine and are continuing to create mini mixes and recordings of their favorite tunes ranging from Bach to Radiohead, all using their classical musical instruments. Reporter Polina Cherezova sat down with the four musicians over Zoom to talk about the series.”

Art vs. Entertainment

A Bird's Eye View

“Through Mixtape Series, my co-founders and I make a case for the aggregate. We pick musical fragments from several places of origin, and weave them into a unique tapestry. We tell our audiences: “come for what you know, stay for what you’ll love.” As the music seamlessly segues from the Beatles, to Antonin Dvorak, to Danish Folk Tune arrangements, audiences can hear how multi-faceted art is.”

 Performing a playlist

“The mixtape lives on.”

“A new performance series that aims to represent modern listening habits, and bring the style of curated playlists to the concert hall.”
